Here's the story behind this interesting find by Jeff Ellis of Baltimore, Maryland.
"This is an example of
the final version of the Nevada blue base, issued in early 1984 shortly before
the advent of the Sheep base. Rick Schofield, from whom I obtained it,
explains that all of these plates, which feature a centered
state name and no sticker
navel, appeared in the 000AAx series, with known
examples in the AAA, AAB,
AAC, AAD, AAJ, AAK, AAN, AAP, AAR, AAS series. He states that some AAx
plates, including at least one in the AAF series, appeared on the normal late
bluebase with the sticker navel and off-center state name. No one knows
why --it's just one of those mysteries. Incidentally, the 000AAA format Nevada
blues began issue with 000ABA, and it was
only at the end of issue that the state backtracked to the 000AAAseries.
Again, who knows why... These
plates, like all Nevada blues, are still valid with a current sticker."
