Texas tweaks its baseplates every couple of years. In 1989, Texas introduced its "Flag" Left baseplate (1). Around the GTx series in 1993, they added the Lone Star State legend to the bottom of the plate (2). Texas stopped issuing validation stickers in 1994, so plates 1995-present have been identified by number series. In 1995-1996, the state started issuing 150 Years of Statehood plates (3). These began in the VJx series. After 1996, the state went back to issuing the flag left base (2). Once the state hit 999-ZZZ, the state introduced a B12-CDF numbering format (no vowels or Q used). Not being able to leave well enough alone, the state flipped the flag to the right of the state name sometime in the 1998 B series (4). Further confusing matters is that the 1987 Big Red base (4), both the Sesquicentennial bases (the bottom base (5) was issued in 1985 and the top base (shown on next page) was issued in 1986) and the 1975 base (6) were still all valid with proper validations.
